Starting Out - Jan. 10-12

Well another winter and another trip to Colorado. On Wednesday, Jan. 10, we left Neptune, NJ and started our trip west. The weather was overcast with temps in the 20s. However, as we traveled into Pennsylvania, the temps started to go straight up and NO snow on the ground. As we arrived at our first overnight location in Columbus Ohio, the temps were in the mid 50s. The remarkable thing was that there was absolutely no snow anywhere to be found. It was great traveling weather. Total mileage for the day was 545 miles.

Our second day, Thursday Jan. 11 was much the same. Temps started in the mid 30s and as we arrived at our second overnight destination, Columbia Missouri, temps were in the mid 50s and NO snow on the ground. Total mileage for the day was 535 miles. 1080 miles down with only 800 to go.

As we started our third day, Friday Jan 12,  the weather forecast called for possible freezing rain and snow with temps falling through the 40s into the low teens at night. We modified our travel so that we would arrive at our destination of Hays, Kansas early in the afternoon and hopefully miss all of the bad weather. We had lunch in St Louis and the temps were in the low 50s. As we traveled further west, the temps dropped 35 degrees in about 1 hour. We arrived in Hays Kansas and the temp was 11 degrees but no bad weather. In the evening we had a little light snow.  Total mileage was 400 miles.
